Biography:
Suzanne Polinsky Born and raised in Victoria, Suzanne (Suzie) has always had a great interest in the arts. Dance had been a constant in her life for many years but in the last nine years she has discovered a passion for painting. Always eager to learn and improve she has enjoyed taking a variety of art classes over the years. Among her most memorable learning experiences was the eight years of sculpture classes with Peggy Walton Packard. Suzanne paints in a traditional style with soft edges, bold colours and strong visuals that combine the mysteries of fantasy and realism. Although she is drawn to the beauty of flowers and gardens, she enjoys painting a variety of subjects in oil or acrylics. Suzanne’s grandfather, Sydney Reynolds owned a popular Victoria china shop for many decades, but it was the arts and gardens that were his first love. He had a great influence on the young Suzanne and she now finds her paintings relay that magical world of nature and gardens that he opened to her. Suzanne’s own beautiful home and garden which she and her husband created give her much pleasure and continual inspiration. They have been honoured to have their garden featured in the April ‘09 issue of Gardens West. Suzanne is a member of FCA (Federation of Canadian Artists) and SPAC (Saanich Penninsula Arts and Crafts)

Artist’s Statement:
Artists Statement: Painting and gardening are my passions. Both bring endless joy and possibilities and seem to bring forth a spiritual connection that has enriched my life in many ways. I have always gardened, but I began painting seriously in 2000. Subjects for my paintings are whatever delights me. Most are developed from photos that I have taken in the garden or on trips. Whether they are real, remembered or imagined many of my paintings seem to reflect the influence my grandfather, Sydney Reynolds had on me as a child. Whenever I was in his beautiful garden at Albert Head he took the time to take me around and point out places where fairies played and the magic of the sun kissing the tops of the flowers. His garden also contained aviaries, a teahouse, statues, paths, ponds and waterfalls, it was a magical place. I seem to be happiest painting those things. To me one of the most enjoyable aspects of painting is trying to capture the play of light on the subjects, to make them come alive with their own mood and mystery. I never tire of the challenge to ‘see what could be’ as I paint. It’s what keeps me excited about the next painting and drives me on. Just as my garden needs endless attention and we reap the great reward of it’s beauty, so I continue to nurture my love of painting by taking classes, workshops and studying the works of many great artists. I love this sentence from ‘Beauty’ by John O’Donnell “When we beautify our gaze, the grace of hidden beauty becomes our joy and sanctuary”. Painting is my joy and sanctuary…as well as my garden!
